On tour:
Paul and Sandra Frampton, Greg O’Conner, John Bylett, Rob Shove, Andy and Sue Sawyer, Kevin Chalmers, Jeff Daniels , Neil Muncey, Andy Smith.
Ashley Frampton, Alex Frampton, Alex Sawyer, Ben Shove, Jack Hodge, Max Smith, Charlie Chalmers, Toby Lake , Jackson Bylett , Luke Ackleton, George Wells, George Craggs, Louis Muncey, Greg Humphries, Andrew Yates, Nathan Sawyer, Rob Haves, Haveer Dookit, Oliver Bylett, John Gammon. (Chris Daniels and Reece Barclay: DNP – hand injuries – detached ligament and broken bone)
The matches:
(1) Saturday: Coq Mosan Rugby Club, Berneau, Belgium
A lovely evening, a pitch as hard as iron and a lack of opposition players. Luke, George Wells, Andrew, OJ and Haveer made up the numbers for our opponents in a 12-a-side match, refereed by our Greg. OJ played scrum half for Coq and did well.
The game was a full-on affair with no punches pulled. As the game wore on, things got a wee bit fractious with the hard pitch not helping, and with our own players banging lumps out of each other: George Wells felt the force of a Rob Haves no-holding-back-nutter-full-back tackle, Jackson decided to get in a big brotherly-hit which left OJ battered and off for rest, and George Craggs got somewhat owned by George Wells late in the second half.
Late in the game, Coq’s number-3 dished out a bit of elbow towards the face of Max. Jack defended his mate, and some handbags ensued. It mattered little, as Greg soon blew for the end of the game, and all players kissed and made up for the usual good natured tour photo under the posts.
The OGs 12 had enough over the scratch 12 to run in 6 tries to nil.
Greg opened the scoring with a sweet try. Then Louis got in on the act with a fine score. Max followed up with another score after some great play in the backs – although George Wells can count himself unlucky with a strong case for holding Max up from the deck with a really great covering defensive tackle. Toby then blasted over for the fourth try. Ben added a fifth with a strong run and finish, and then Ben added another with Jackson converting.
Final score: 34-0
We had a really good drink in the opponents bar and exchanged songs, gifts and good wishes. Then back on the coach for the Saturday night out on the town.
(2) Sunday: Maasmechelen Rugby Club, Borglaan, Belgium
Thankfully it rained in the morning and then as we got to our destination for out 12:30 match against Maasmechelen RC. We had had enough of the concrete playing surfaces the day before and in our Kent plate cup final the week before, and looked forward to something with a bit of give.
Maasmechelen RC are part of a large, well equipped sports centre, with a small football stadium, running track, tennis courts, cafes, bars etc.
The OGs lads were a wee bit jaded after only a few hours sleep following a night on the town. All in all however, they were in pretty good nick it seemed to me.
Paul, Andy and Greg got the lads going, and after a slow start to the warm up they were looking OK.
Our opponents looked pretty good in their warm up. They had a few big lads and looked pretty strong. They also sported a great green and yellow kit. They had about 3 subs, and so it was game on.
Well, the U17/16 lads got stuck in straight away with Louis, Alex, and George Craggs driving everyone on and really taking the game to our opponents. After 20 minutes we were 24 points up and playing some fantastic attacking rugby. Andrew bagged two scorching tries, and John and Ben crossed the line, and Greg knocked over two conversions. Maasmechelen were blown away by that start, and when they finally got a line break, Rob lined up their break-away forward and did the usual. Everyone was on fire – Great to see.
MRC grabbed a converted try in the second half which they thoroughly deserved. They never once dropped their heads. Andrew bagged 3 tries in all, and Ben waltzed in with a fine collection of 4 scores. Charlie ignited his after-burners for a lovely score, and Alex, Rob and Louis showed us all how to finish.
Nathan had received a whack to his thumb in the previous match and eventually had to join Chris and Reece on the touchline. The pack today were really solid, and with George bossing the scrum area they made sure we had stacks of ball today, and the score shows we sure made the most if it.
Final score: 79-7
Scorers:
Tries: Ben(4), Andrew(3), John(1), Alex(2), Louis(1), Charlie(1), Rob(1). Conversions: Greg(4), Alex(1), Jackson(1), Rob(1)
The Maasmechelen boys are a great crew and took the heavy defeat really well. The OGs lads endured the usual continental tunnel of death at the end and we had a rowdy group photo at the end.
We then hit their bar where hot grub was served and much beer was drunk. Songs were sung, gifts exchanged, Toby was named man of the match by Maasmechen RC, the sun came out and we lounged about for an hour watching a game of footy with the Maasmechelen lads.
Happy days.
CHEERS.

| | Date: | Fri 23 Apr 2010 21:11:54 BST | | Subject: | U17 Kent Plate Final - 21 April | | | U17 Kent Plate Final OGs 8-34 Tonbridge Judds
Venue: Aylesford RFC Pitch: Hard Weather: Sunny/cold
The lads had fantastic support today from the followers of OGs rugby. Thank you very much to all of you.
We could not field 3 U17 stalwarts due to injury (Chris) and the Icelandic volcano (Nathan and Carl). This was to be the second final the very unlucky Nathan has missed. Also our knackered prop James made it back from Iceland in the morning of the match, after a tedious wait for a flight.
Once again, we had to call on our brilliant U16 lads. Once again they were a credit to the club. The U16s who played were:
Jackson, Max, Charlie, Will, Ryan, Paul, Toby
A couple of parents had watched Tonbridge narrowly beat Old Elthamians in their semi-final match a few weeks ago. They had drawn with Ashford, who we beat in our semi-final, and they had lost to Colfes, whom we beat a couple of weeks ago in a high scoring try-fest. So, we expected a close game.
The TJs must have brought in their big guns for this one. They had a large #12 who knocked holes in the OGs proud defence throughout the game. They played to their strengths, and they deserved their win.
The first half ended 10-0 to TJs. The OGs lads defended with their usual heart against the hard running TJs backs, and also conjured a few scoring chances themselves. The ball ran the TJs way it seemed for most of the half. In the last 5 minutes we saw TJs defending their line really well after sustained pressure from the OGs boys.
The second half started well for the OGs lads with Louis slotting over a sweet penalty kick. But for the next 25 minutes we saw TJs cut loose and smash over four tries. Game over. With 5 minutes remaining the OGs boys finally got some real momentum going and found themselves parked in the TJs 22. The lads won a couple of penalties and with Jackson and then Jack taking up the crash ball we nearly blasted over for forwards try. The finish came from the backs however, with Louis nudging a sweet kick to the corner for the galloping John to scoop up and waltz over for an excellent try. Final whistle.
All the players left the pitch bruised, battered, and bloodied. This game sure works better on surface with a bit of give.
Squad: Jack, Max, James, OJ, Jackson, Haveer, Ben, Ryan, Louis, Greg, Andrew, Reece, John, Will, Charlie, Alex, Rob, Paul, Toby,
After the winners were congratulated, the words said in the team huddle were all about how much the lads had enjoyed the season and enjoyed going into battle for each other.
Yeah, we were gutted, but the lads had had a great run, and had played some supreme rugby at times in a season of progress and achievement.
It just did not happen for us in this match against a well drilled side who not only had a threatening set of backs but were who also armed with an excellent defence.
Cheers.

Team: Jack, Max, James, OJ, Jackson, Haveer, Alex, Ben, Chris, George, Louis, Charlie, Toby, Reece, Carl, Nathan, John, Rob
Supporters: Nikay, Jane, Neil, Toby’s Mum, Charlie’s Dad, Max’s Dad (STILL can’t remember names - sorry), Rob, Jill, and on the phone, Fran.
Coaches: Paul and Greg (Cheers Greg – we know you have been under the cosh a bit work-wise .. great you could be there for the lads)
U16s: Jackson, Toby, Max, Charlie
Great to see George in the thick of it again.
Paul ensured we got to the Colfe’s ground an hour before kick off, and this gave the lads plenty of time to get warmed up and focussed.
We probably all had a few thoughts about the, shall we say, feisty encounter last year. This match, however, turned out to be the antithesis of that game. It was fast, furious, open, mad, great fun, entertaining, and sporting - thanks to the discipline of the players, coaches, and supporters, and the authority of the referee. Many of the OGs players today (Monday) certainly knew they had been involved in an epic, played out on a large and superb pitch.
The scoring sequence was as follows (OGs first):
0-7 / 3-7 / 3-12 / 10-12 / 15-12 / 15-19 / 15-26 / 22-26 / 22-29 / 29-29 / 34-29 / 41-29 / 41-36.
The OGS scorers in the probable scoring sequence were as follows:
Louis – pen, Louis – try + conversion, Reece - try, Louis – try + conversion, Carl – try, Louis – conversion, Nathan – try, Alex – try, Louis – conversion (21 points to Louis). Half time occurred somewhere in that lot.
The Colfes boys were clearly a skilled unit, and if they had had a full squad, the outcome might well have been different. In the end, they did not run out of steam, they ran out of players. The Colfe’s number 14 was excellent in defence and attack. His great performance today was epitomised by his brilliant try saving tackle with the score at 41-29, and about 10 minutes remaining on the clock Some tremendous work from the OGS forwards and slick hands in the backs saw Toby with a clear run to the line to seal the game. He made the yards and dived over for the score … only to be thwarted by a brilliant covering tackle by the aforementioned #14 who stormed in to rip the ball away with the lads about to celebrate the score – and the win. Tough luck on Toby, but a great lesson for everyone.
I have no doubt though, that, as we have seen throughout the season, the lads could have played against 20 players and still would have been giving their all until the final whistle.
The OGs lads were a credit to the club. All are to be commended for showing one of the bigger clubs in the South East what can be achieved by getting a small set of talented players playing for each other and putting in the hours at the training sessions. It was great to see the points racking up, with tries being scored from set-moves, improvisation, and from all quarters of the team. Louis bagged a couple of cheeky efforts, Reece smashed over for what has become his trade-mark this season, Alex polished off a great driving maul from the forwards, Carl finished with aplomb, and Nathan skinned his rapid opponent on the outside for a fine score. Our defence was a bit shaky at times, but we showed what we can do with some brilliant defensive work in the second half, in particular when the Colfes lads were going for it at the end. It was good to see Rob make those bone-crunching tackles that we have seen from him in the past – great stuff my friend. And our front 3 were a unit today for sure.
And once again, the U16s boys all played really well today – great stuff.
Phew! Loved it.
Cheers lads.

The U12’s gathered a decent squad for this Year’s Kent rugby festival.
The day was sunny but cool.
Despite a valiant effort, the lads just could sustain any real momentum, and got caught several times by sharp opponents. Despite not gaining a win, all the OGS lads had a great day, well marshalled and coached by Justin, Warren, Alan, and Ben’s Dad. The lads had excellent support too from friends and family.
Match 1: OGS 5:25 Westcombe Park A strong Park side were given a test by the OGs boys, but their strong runners were the difference between the two sides. Will nabbed a try in the first half after boshing his way through 2 Park defenders and crashing over for a deserved score.
Match 2: OGS 5:20 Canterbury The Canterbury boys had a field day in the first half, running in 4 tries. The OGs boys came out with guns blazing in the second, and created several scoring opportunities. After some sustained pressure in the Canterbury corner, Tom nipped in for a try off the back of a scrum. 5-0 to the OGs lads in the second half!
Match 3: OGS 5:25 Vigo and New Ash Green Vigo and New Ash Green had shown us their mettle by drawing with Westcombe Park. The score does not do justice to the enterprising play shown by the lads. Captain Rob scored a trade-mark try after a couple of side-steps, and a show-boat dive into the corner.
Match 4: OGS 5:15 Thanet Wanderers We then moved onto a narrow pitch for the start of the shield games. This suited Thanet who could play a simple mauling game, keeping the ball tucked up their jumpers. There were few opportunities to bring in our speedy backs. Daniel scored his first try for the club, crashing over in the second half, after a steal in the Thanet line-out.
Finally:
U17 player, Alex Frampton represented the club as our referee, and although initially booked for just one match, ended up refereeing three and drew several plaudits from the spectators. (He did referee very well).
Cheers

Match 1: Maidstone 0-10
The lads kicked off the tournament against a strong Maidstone 15 who fully deserved their win. Greg’s tournament was over pretty quickly after his thumb got mashed by a size 12 boot. Chris took one on the pant potatoes which rendered him helpless for most of the first half.
Match 2: Gravesend 5-0
OGs pretty much dominated this game with our speedster Nathan bagging a sweet first half try in the corner after some fine work in the backs. The second half saw the lads camped in Gravesend territory.
Match 3: Dartford 7-0
OGs had the upper hand for most of this encounter. 0-0 at half time. After 3 minutes of the second half, some fine work by the forwards opened up the play for a sweeping move in the backs. Reece received the ball out wide and then set off on a dazzling 20 metre run to crash over under the posts, with OGs runners in support on his shoulder. Carl converted – game over.
Match 4: Bromley 0-3
Our play-off match saw the OGs dominate much of the first half only to concede a late penalty. The second half saw Bromley on top only to be denied by resolute defending by the lads. The Bromley coaches congratulated Paul and Andy after the game for our display (they mashed us 2 years ago), and also, it must be said for the good spirit in which the game was played.
Oliver had a stormer today, and Reece’s try against Dartford was a peach. But as ever, all the lads contributed to an excellent team effort. And once again, great to have the U16’s lads, Jackson and Max stepping up to the plate. Plenty of support today – magic.
Excellent venue also.
Cheers.

Old Gravesendians vs Aylesford Bulls
Old Gravesendians team was Tyler, Ben, Mathew, Mathew, Robert, Kiran, James, Jonathan, Jordan, Tom, Ben, Jake, Daniel, Charlie, Ilya. (if I missed anyone I’m sorry)
We had two games against Aylesford, the first game Aylesford dominated the first half they had nearly all of the possession and scored around 4 times. We missed some tackles and they leaped at the chance. In the second half we came back at them. We held them back at put in some brilliant tackles. They only scored one try. The ball didn’t have any grip so when there was a lot of dropped ball.
In the second game we changed the ball so there was a lot less handling errors. In the first half they scored only two tries. Which was a real improvement on the first game. In the second half we came right back in there faces and thanks to a great steal by Kiran we scored a try! (the try scorer was Charlie with his first score for the club ). Then at the end of the game a very dodgy decision by the ref let Aylesford score.
With thanks to all the supporters who came down to watch us.

Score: Ashford 12 – 22 Old Gravesendians
Team: Jack Hodge, Max Smith, James Corridan, Oliver Bylett, Jackson Bylett , Chris Daniels, Ben Shove, Alex Frampton, Carl Oliver, Greg Humphries, Andrew Yates, Nathan Sawyer, Reece Barclay, John Gammon, Rob Haves, Haveer (the Dook) Dookit, Charlie Chalmers, Will Forman.
Supporters:
Great support today for the lads. It makes such a difference to them: Liz, John and Maisie, Andy, Andy, Claire and her sister, Jane, John, Fran, Claire, Max’s Dad, Charlie’s Dad, Sue, Alex, Ashley, Sandra, Mike, Mike, Justine, Niki, Neil.
Coaches: Greg (who had to make a special effort to be with the lads today), Andy, Paul.
The U17’s today, complimented by Jackson, Max, Will and Charlie from the U16s achieved an excellent win over a tough Ashford 15.
The first 15 minutes saw Old Gravesendians camped in Ashford’s half. The OGs boys had plenty of ball and attacked from all over the park, but resolute defending by Ashford repelled all that was thrown at them. Towards the end of this period Andrew made a great burst for the line after some fine work from the backs, only to be wrapped up 3 metres from the line. Minutes later Oliver and Ben worked some magic from a set line-out move only to be thwarted a couple of metres from the Ashford line.
Slowly Ashford began to gain ground, but the OGS boys came back at them and were awarded a penalty after 20 minutes within the range of Greg’s right boot. On this occasion he fell short. Ashford then found their momentum again and slowly but surely gained territory. After 30 minutes they were rewarded for their efforts and boshed over for a deserved try (unconverted). The OGs boys just could not get it together at this point and the Ashford lads started to dominate. The Ashford break-away forwards were really making inroads into the OGS defence, and Ashford were duly rewarded for their pressure with a sweet try, easily converted. Half-time 12-0.
The half-time talk was all about commitment. Paul, Greg and Andy demanded more effort in all quarters of the OGs game. The lads got themselves fired up and were first back on the park ready for the battle.
From the kick-off, the Dook claimed the ball and stormed into the Ashford pack. The ball was recycled a couple of times after some tenacious rucking by the OGS boys, and then after some quick hands, Andrew had a yard or two of space. He made the metres and then off-loaded to the Dook 15 metres from the line. The Dook has Reece on his shoulder screaming for the wide pass, but Haveer sold the dummy pass to the Ashford defenders and crashed over for the try that set the boys up. Greg converted with aplomb. Game on.
The match opened up then with both teams playing some great open rugby. After 10 minutes of the second half the Ashford lads then conceded ground after a succession of penalties, giving the OGs some great territory deep into Ashford’s 22. The kick at goal was on but Alex went for the line out and the chance of extra points. The throw-in was sweet, Oliver was launched high, took the catch perfectly, and after what seemed an eternity hit the deck with forwards set for the drive. Jackson took the ball at the back and the driving unit smashed over the Ashford line for a great forwards try for the ball carrier. The Saturday training had paid off big time. Greg slotted the conversion and the OGs boys had their noses in front at 12-14.
After 25 minutes OGs were awarded a penalty within kicking range. Once again Alex elected to go for the chance of extra points and Greg kicked for the corner. His kick skewed off his boot a bit and although line-out was on, it looked like points may have been squandered. The line-out was won however and the ball shifted in-field. Again some fine work by the forwards secured possession and then Carl spotted an overlap on the right, with players loading up to the left. He switched the play, avoided the referee, and passed to John who took the ball on a few more metres. Chris was lurking out wide and John gave him a sweet pass for the number7 to score in the corner. Cue mayhem in the OGs supporters ranks. Greg missed the difficult conversion out wide. 12-19.
With 30 minutes played OGs were awarded another penalty and this time the kick at goal was on for sure and Greg made no mistake. 12-22.
Ashford now had no option but full-on attack. They went for it big time, but the OGS s defence held firm with all the lads putting their bodies on the line. Charlie’s tackle to put a player twice his size into touch epitomised the team effort in the final 10.
Bish-bosh – Job done.
The Ashford boys accepted defeat with good grace today and the club were excellent hosts. Andrew was voted man-of-the match by the Ashford boys. The OGs boys voted the Ashford number 9 as their pick. Alex and the Ashford skipper both gave short congratulatory speeches which was great to see.
Carl stepped up after the big ask to play at scrum half today. Top stuff my friend.
Some of the rucking today was top-class – great stuff.
And the effort in the scrums was tremendous – given the enforced change of personnel as the game progressed and the aggressive Ashford front row.
Line-out – some excellent takes – with OJ on fire.
Once again the OGS lads were a credit to this small club of ours, which in turn, gives them shed loads of encouragement and support.
Many thanks also to our referee today.
Cheers

The fixture was due to be played at Canterbury, but their ground was deemed unfit after the snow. Our pitch was in excellent condition and we offered to play the game at our gaff. We had assembled a good big squad from the U16 and U17 teams. Unfortunately Canterbury could only field 9 players. We decided to have a match anyway between a team comprising mainly U17 players against a mix of U16, U17 and Canterbury players.
The game by all accounts was a scrappy one. I managed to catch the last 15 minutes only. The bit I saw looked alright - so maybe I was lucky. Nevertheless the lads did enjoy the scrap and the run out. And it sure was good to have a match after such a prolonged period of inactivity due to the bad weather and the Christmas break.
Final score (I think) : OGS U16/17 22:8 Canterbury Barbarians.
U17 Scorers - for the record (I think): Tries: Louis (2), Chris (1), Penalties: Louis (2), Conversion: Louis (1). A good day at the office for Louis.
The club played hosts to a good sized crowd of players an supported that day, many of whom stayed for a drink, a bite to eat, and a chat after the game. An excellent Old Elthamians U14 team were our other visting club. The U12's were enjoying a coke or two plus heaps of pasta after their game with Gravesnd, played at the Grammar.
PS - Just to say: Jill Oliver was also at the Dover game yesterday (I missed Jill from my lost of away supporters in previous email)

We reckoned (Kent RFU league tables were still not published on their web-site) that a 15 point win would see us top the development league. The 11 point winning margin shows how close we came.
Once again the U17 lads were grateful to Sam and Charlie for stepping up from the U16s (who had a 17-0 win today versus Whitstable RFC in the return fixture). Louis played scrum half with Greg number 10. Alex played hooker and made up a supreme front row with Jack and James
The score-line does not reflect a dominant display by the lads today. I would say at least 75% of the game was played in the Dover half. Dover must be thankful for their spirited defence which repelled our attacks time and again. The narrow pitch stifled any wing play, and most of the match was played down narrow channels.
The pack won the scrum duel against a far heftier pack. Our line-out functioned well and we also stole a lot of a ball from theirs. We dominated play in the loose, winning and setting up so much ball for raid after raid. And in defence we gave them nothing.
The lads were clearly up for this one and they played with discipline, controlled aggression, and skill, throughout. It was a great team effort, and we came so close to gaining the points we needed.
Greg kicked us into a 9 (3 from 3) point lead by half time after persistent infringements by Dover, for which their number8 was binned. The second half was all one-way traffic heading to the Dover line. After 10 minutes, Dover scored from a penalty in one of their few attacks, greatly assisted by Dover gaining metres for the OGS boys not retreating and for a bit of banter. OGs replied with a lovely try from Carl. Some great work by the lads in midfield resulted in the ball whipping through the backs to Carl, who for once had a chink of space. He took 2-3 strides and then knocked a sweet grubber kick through the Dover defensive line, and at pace, dived on the ball between the final two defenders. One of our finest efforts this season.
A great team effort today lads. You gave a us a performance in attack and defence that we are proud of. You are a credit to the club. Thank you.
